For some insurance titles, the base of pension and disability contributions must be at least 50% of the minimum wage; for other groups the threshold is set at 30% of that amount. With the minimum wage of PLN 4,806 gross in force in 2026, 50% is PLN 2,403 and 30% is PLN 1,441.80.

Exempt from the professional-activity condition are, among others, parents of children with disabilities and people applying for the benefit for a child who holds Polish citizenship.

A practical consequence for entrepreneurs: a foreigner running a sole proprietorship on preferential contributions has a pension and disability base equal to 30% of the minimum wage. If it cannot confirm this, it must suspend payment. The most common reasons are:

a record in the Border Guard register of the parent or child leaving Poland without data on return;

no record in ZUS or KRUS registers of the parent being registered for pension and disability insurance;

no information in the education-information system that the child attends kindergarten or school;

discrepancies in first name, surname, date of birth or PESEL number.

After suspension, ZUS calls the applicant to submit explanations and evidence. The reply must be made within 3 days of receiving the summons. If the evidence confirms the conditions, payment is resumed from the month in which it was suspended. That is why it is worth regularly checking the inbox in eZUS, especially after a trip abroad or a change in form of employment.

The most common mistakes

Assuming that last year's application "carries over" into the next period.

Filing an application after 30 June and losing the benefit for earlier months.

A break in insurance, e.g. between the end of one contract and the start of the next, which can lead to suspension of the benefit for a foreigner.

Typos in personal data that make the registers fail to "see" the parent or child.

For a longer trip from Poland, it is worth informing ZUS of the change in situation right away.
